Alaskans support increased education funding and reform in poll commissioned by Governor Dunleavy [Video]

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) – With education continuing to take center stage in Juneau, Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy held a press conference, on Tuesday, April 9, to discuss the results of an opinion poll given to Alaskans around the state.

The poll, conducted by Dittman Research, asked Alaskans a series of questions about education reform.

One result touted by Dunleavy found that 57 percent of respondents said the changes and reforms to the system of education in Alaska are most important to improve outcomes.

This compares to 33 percent who said increasing education funding was most important, and came after respondents were told that Alaska ranked high in funding nationwide but low in test scores and graduation rates.

One of Dunleavy’s goals in education has been to expand the scope of charter schools in Alaska.

His office has proposed allowing charter school applications to go straight through the State Board of Education, a sticking point among critics.
