RIVERSIDE, Iowa (KCRG) – As school districts plan their budgets, they’re having to ensure teachers get paid enough to satisfy a new state law.

New teachers have to make $47,500 starting next school year and $50,000 the next school year.

And teachers with twelve years’ experience must make at least $60,000 next school year. And $62,000 the year following.

This new law does come with some funding to offset the new costs. But smaller school districts like Highland in Riverside said money is always something at the top of the mind because there’s often not much latitude in the budget.

”We’re always scared for the worst case scenario and so I feel like we’ve always tried to be prudent financially,” said Ken Crawford, Highland and WACO School Districts Superintendent.
