SPENCER, Iowa — The city of Spencer is warning people looking to help victims of flooding in the Northwest Iowa town that there have been several scam sites looking to capitalize off of the tragedy.
“PLEASE DO NOT ENGAGE WITH SITES BEING SET UP FOR FUNDING OR AID that are not coordinated through this page or a legitimate business or community member that you know personally,” the city posted on its official Facebook page.
Some of the scammers have used a Spencer city logo and linked to GoFundMe accounts with no connection to city organizations, the Facebook posted noted.
“Currently, the only legitimate GoFundMe related to the City of Spencer donations is through the Spencer Chamber of Commerce,” the post stated.
City officials also said through the post that community volunteers and aid givers are appreciated but that efforts should be coordinated through the command center to make sure help …
