Tips for donating safely to worthy causes [Video]

Nebraska is one of eight states that does not require professional fundraisers to register with any entity or file statements disclosing how much money they make from charitable solicitations.

In other states, such as New Mexico and Colorado, fundraisers must file statements with state agencies that specify the terms of the contract, including the percentage cut of donations they take.

Experts say the lack of transparency on the state level makes it important for organizations and potential donors to be scrupulous about who they do business with.

Paul Strawhecker, an Omaha native and career fundraiser who owns and operates a consulting business focused on nonprofit fundraising, said nonprofits should be skeptical of professional fundraisers who are paid a percentage of contributions. Strawhecker said his firm typically charges a flat monthly fee that doesn’t change regardless of if the goal was met or exceeded.
