Trump campaign lawsuit against Whitmer, Benson an attempt to disenfranchise voters, lawmaker says [Video]

Michigan Democrats are pushing back on a new lawsuit filed by Donald Trump’s presidential campaign over using federal offices to expand voter registration in the state.

“It is unfortunate that this divisive, partisan lawsuit was filed yesterday,” Secretary of State spokesperson Angela Benander said Tuesday, July 16. “Making it easier for veterans and small business owners in Michigan to register to vote should not be controversial.”

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, along with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and a state elections official, were named as defendants in the federal lawsuit filed Monday by the Republican National Committee and Trump’s presidential campaign. Benson and Whitmer are Democrats.

The lawsuit claims Whitmer overstepped her authority when she arranged for Veterans Affairs medical centers and Small Business Association offices to act as voter registration agencies. Those federal departments, and their leaders, were also named as defendants in the suit.
