Ugliest, cruelest policy possible: Houseless Portlanders say camping ban will ruin lives [Video]

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – People were gearing up for Portland’s new daytime camping ordinance on Sunday, which forbids camping in places like city sidewalks starting Monday.

Those in the houseless community say it’s cruel and lives will be ruined.

The ordinances bans camps in the public right of way. That includes sidewalks, areas blocking businesses, and private property. Those in violation could face a $100 fine or a week in jail if they have reasonable access to shelter and are declining the help.

“It’s the ugliest and cruelest policy possible,” said Peggy Zabroski, who lives in a camp and is involved in the houseless advocacy group Stop the Sweeps. She said the policy creates a revolving door of issues.
