Use Business Strategy In Your Love Life

Finding love isn’t just about chemistry and sparks, says Sarah Buchner, MBA ’21. Romantic mergers can be every bit as strategic as business partnerships.

With a PhD in data science, Buchner has a penchant for the analytical. When health complications revealed that her childbearing window was narrowing, she “decided to not rely on fate” in finding a partner, but to use strategy to “find a co-founder for my life.”.

Exploring existing research on dating and collecting her own data from 100 real-world dates, Buchner discovered that “A long-term partner is way more like a business partner and a best friend than somebody we have a spark with.” Instead of expecting love to magically appear, we can strategically seek it out.

Buchner compiled her findings in ‘Start Up Your Love Life,’ a book that helps romantic hopefuls apply business knowledge and data analysis to finding a life partner. With concepts like total addressable market and product-market fit, Buchner says we can “treat [love] more like [a] career than something that will randomly happen. Make magic happen,” she says.
