Starting this month, people in Alaska can apply for their burn permit to safely burn debris, as wildfire season begins.

“A division of Alaska Forestry and Fire Prevention burn permit in order to burn on state private eminence lands,” says Beth Ipsen, Public Specialist for the Bureau of Land Management Alaska Fire Service.

Early spring fires are mostly caused by humans due to outdoor activities, dead grass, wind and litter. Last year over a quarter million acres burned with over 100 human caused fires.

“Don’t leave your campfires unattended and make sure that when you’re done with your campfire it is fully put out and cool to the touch,” said Lily Coyle, statewide public information Officer with the Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection.  

It is recommended to make an emergency kit and be aware of wildfire movements in case you need to evacuate.
