National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company responsible for delivering the government’s National Broadband Plan, has now connected 100,000 premises to high-speed fibre broadband.

NBI has passed 304,606 homes and businesses, meaning they can avail of a high-speed fibre broadband connection on the NBI network.

A total of 101,645 premises have connected to date, equivalent to a take-up rate of 33%, which NBI said is well ahead of projections and international comparisons.

The take-up rate has surpassed 50% in areas of the country where the network has been live for 18 months. NBI has laid more than 45,000km of fibre cabling to build the network so far.

“It’s very positive to see 100,000 connections achieved at this point in the National Broadband Plan,” said Minister of State Ossian Smyth.

“The level of take-up of broadband services that we’re seeing across the country underpins why we needed a State-backed rollout to ensure that no community in rural Ireland is left behind.
