2 Sudanese nationals indicted for cyberattacks on Alabama government websites [Video]

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Gov. Ivey is applauding the federal indictment of two people accused of a cyberattack that targeted state government websites in Alabama.

Security experts say no one is immune to cyberattacks. It can happen to big companies, small businesses, and even governments like Alabama saw in March.

Ahmed Salah Yousif Omer, 22, and Alaa Salah Yusuuf Omer, 27, both Sudanese nationals, are charged with conspiracy to damage protected computers.

The Department of Justice says they operate Anonymous Sudan, an online cybercriminal group responsible for tens of thousands of denial of service attacks nationwide.

The attacks at times lasted several days. Other victims include the Department of Defense and FBI. The DOJ says they went so far as to attack hospitals providing emergency care to patients.

According to the DOJ, Anonymous Sudan’s attacks have caused more than $10 million in damages to U.S. victims.
