For two decades, Keke Palmer has been a household name for millennials and zoomers. But she lives her life like a non-celebrity as a means to plan better financially after filing for bankruptcy at 18.

Palmer, now 31, got her start in Hollywood as a kid — booking her first acting role in Barbershop 2: Back in Business in 2004, when she was 10 years old. From there, she booked major roles in 2006’s Akeelah and the Bee and 2007’s Jump In. Having had a rapid rise to fame, Palmer — who went on to star as the titular character on Nickelodeon‘s True Jackson VP — found herself providing for her family even before her teen years.
