MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – This is going to be a big year for a number of major projects in the city that collectively represent billions of dollars in public investment.
Some of those will be completed this year. Some will take years. And the completion date on others is still up in the air.
Progress already is evident on construction projects large and small, from a new civic center to a park that will be a tribute to the city’s greatest athletes to a new downtown airport.
City leaders have described all of the simultaneous construction as “unprecedented.” Elliot Maisel, who recently stepped down as chairman of the Mobile Airport Authority, reflected on it over the summer.
“We’re in the golden age of Mobile,” he said then. “A lot of a lot of times, you know, people don’t realize and say, visualize things like that until some years down the road.”
