3.9 magnitude earthquake hits Inland Empire [Video]

An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.9 hit Southern California on Thursday morning, rattling homes and businesses across the region.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake struck at 9:39 a.m., about four miles from Lake Elsinore.

The quake was about 8.8 km in depth, the survey said. As of 9:50 a.m., there was no word of injuries or damages.

Thousands of earthquakes are recorded in California each year, but the vast majority are extremely minor. Several hundred reach a magnitude of 3.0, and only about 15 to 20 are greater than magnitude 4.0, according to the USGS.

In North America, only Alaska records more quakes per year than California.
