FOLLOW UP: Dozens pack Spartanburg city council, in support of gym urged out by new complex [Video]

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – A large crowd packed into Spartanburg council chambers Monday night, all in support of a local business owner.

Nautilus Fitness Center is a long-standing business where Spartanburg plans to build a joint city-county government complex. The city gave the owner an offer to buy his property with an end of October deadline to relocate. But– he’s not moving without a fight.

“John’s life’s work is being forced to not be a part of the new complex. It’s very upsetting,” said one resident and Nautilus member during public comment.

The crowd of people reaching outside the door of the chamber was just a small testament to the people connected to Nautilus Fitness. The business has been on Church street for 37 years. But the city plans to tear it down, making room for a government complex paid for by the penny sales tax.
