RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Player-coach relationships in sports are vital to a team’s success.

The South Dakota Mines football program is seeing this firsthand. The Hardrockers have a new offensive coordinator and a different starting QB for the first time in four year, making it crucial for them to both be on the same page.

”I firmly believe the most important relationship in all of sports is the play caller and the starting quarterback,” Mines Offensive Coordinator Ryan Freeman said.

Freeman and QB Jake Martinelli are four months into working side-by-side. Freeman comes to South Dakota from the University of Memphis, and Martinelli from the sidelines as a backup. The two now have a chance to do some different things in their new roles. Martinelli takes over from Jayden Johannsen who transferred to Murray State.
