Pennsylvania to join IRS direct filing program [Video]

(WHTM) — Pennsylvania just became the newest state to join the IRS’s direct filing program.

The program will allow Pennsylvanians to file their tax returns online for free directly with the IRS. The pilot program started last year with 12 states, saving taxpayers over $5 million in filing fees according to the U.S. Treasury. U.S. Secretary to the Treasury Janet Yellen joined Governor Shapiro in Philadelphia to make the announcement.

“It saves taxpayers money up front,” Yellen said. “They do not have to pay to prepare or file their returns, and it saves them money on the back end by helping them get their refunds and claim the tax credits they deserve.”

Republicans in the US House proposed to scale back funding for the IRS and eliminate direct filing altogether for the 2025 filing year.
