Rustic lakefront campground near Tahquamenon Falls to close for upgrades [Video]

MACKINAC COUNTY, MI — One of the Upper Peninsula’s more remote campgrounds is closing its gates for the fall as it undergoes repairs.

The Milakokia Lake State Forest Campground will close after Labor Day to start on improvements for better traffic flow, boating access and replacing vault toilets.

The campground is just over an hour from Tahquamenon Falls State Park, which runs the Milakokia Lake campground.

The campground will remain closed for improvements from Sept. 3 to Nov. 30, according to the Tahquamenon Falls State Park Facebook page.

The rustic campground is located on its namesake, Milakokia Lake, about 25 minutes inland from Lake Superior, in Mackinac County.

Sitting right on the lakeshore, the campground has boat launches suitable for kayaks, canoes and small watercrafts.

The lake is also a popular fishing spot as the water reaches down approximately 26 feet at its deepest …
