Volunteers help Sand Springs man’s efforts to clean up abandoned homeless village | News [Video]

SAND SPRINGS, Okla. — On Friday, volunteers headed out to a homeless village in Sand Springs to start the cleanup process.

FOX23 told you about the large encampment on Tuesday.

Some of the structures have electricity hookups and some even have a second floor.

The man in charge of the cleanup efforts, Grant McCalip said it’s been an eyesore for the community for five years.

FOX23 went to Sand Springs on Friday as cleanup got started.

After reporting on this story, McCalip said he was flooded with emails, texts and phone calls from the community saying they wanted to help.

It all came as a shock to him, but it gave him some hope back.

“It makes my heart so full. This thing felt hopeless in the beginning and it feels like there’s some hope now,” McCalip said.

On Wednesday, the homeless village had mountains of trash, used clothes and old food in it.
