SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WGEM) – Illinois businesses will soon be getting a break on credit card fees thanks to a new law enjoying broad support.

The Interchange Fee Prohibition Act bans credit card companies from imposing swipe fees on the taxes and tips portions of a sale.

The legislation was part of the FY25 budget bills Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Democrat, signed the Illinois budget bills into law in June.

Starting July 1, 2025, credit card companies will be barred from charging fees on taxes and tips.

Illinois Retail Merchants Association (IRMA) President and CEO Rob Karr said these fees are paid by merchants who pass them along to customers.

“This is a real problem that Illinois lawmakers have taken the first step at chipping away at with the passage of the Interchange Fee Prohibition Act,” he said.
