Thousands of natural gas customers to see bill decrease [Video]

(WFSB) – Thousands of customers in Connecticut will see their natural gas bills go down starting next month.

For Connecticut Natural Gas, the decrease was about 5.3 percent, or a $7 decrease on an average heating customer bill.

CNG had originally sought a 4 percent bill increase.

For Southern Connecticut Gas, the decrease was about 4.7 percent, or a $5.25 decrease on an average heating customer bill.

It had originally sought a 9 percent increase.

Both CNG and SCG are owned by Avangrid.

In its decision on Monday, the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority decreased combined revenue for both gas companies by $35.3 million.

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong applauded the decision.

“Look, there’s nothing to really celebrate frankly because people are still paying too much, so I’m not popping champagne corks over here,” Tong said. “What I am saying is, we’re moving in the right direction. It doesn’t happen every day that ratepayers see a decrease in their rates.”

Sen. Ryan Fazio, Sen. Tony Hwang, and Sen. Minority Leader Stephen Harding issued a statement.
