TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – The supermarket merger of Albertsons and Kroger that could have changed the face of many well-known locations is off, but the parties involved raised concerns about competing with other growing forces in their field.
The former owner of a small market downtown, as well as supermarket shoppers, said that the ruling was the right move stepping in to block the merger, even if it resulted in one party backing out.
As the wheels fell off the merger, life went on at the Marana Fry’s for Charles Strauss.
“I don’t think that’s anything bad,” Strauss said.
The stated reason for a merger between Albertson and Kroger, which owns Fry’s, was to better compete against Walmart, Amazon, and Costco which have been cutting into the supermarket pie. But Don and Ginger Foster weren’t buying it.
