Businesses accepting cash, no right turn on red and more. Here’s what you need to know before the new year.

WASHINGTON — With the new year, there will also be some new laws.

Some of the laws passed in D.C. over the past few years will be going into effect Jan. 1, 2025. Here’s what they are, broken down for you.

1. Cashless Business Ban

This law requiring all businesses to accept cash has faced delays and exemptions and is finally set to be enforced starting Jan. 1. D.C. Council initially passed the law in 2020.

But there will be some exemptions allowed. 

It applies to businesses engaged in direct-to-consumer transactions, such as bars, restaurants, retail stores and grocery stores. But an emergency measure passed in December will exempt businesses with alcohol licenses and those open late at night for the first 90 days due to safety concerns.

Other exceptions include sales made over the phone, internet or mail order; parking facilities that didn’t already accept …
