GREENSBORO, N.C. — At its regular meeting Tuesday night, the Greensboro City Council named councilmember Marikay Abuzaiter as Mayor Pro Tempore.
The position had been open since the death of Yvonne Johnson in early December. Johnson served as Greensboro’s Mayor Pro Tem for 19 years.
Abuzaiter was first elected to City Council in 2011 and was re-elected in 2012, 2015, 2019 and 2022. According to a press release, she joined City Council to “be an advocate for small businesses, being a former small business owner of Mahi’s Restaurant for 22 years, to support our public safety and to give a voice to all Greensboro residents.”
Last year, Abuzaiter told WFMY News 2 she was strongly considering running for mayor in 2025 with Nancy Vaughn’s seat set to open up. It remains to be seen if those plans have changed.
