Lawmakers in Connecticut concerned about many issues at start of legislative session [Video]

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) – Two days into the legislative session, there is already questions about the fate of billions of dollars Connecticut gets in federal money.

The concerns stem from representatives in Washington, as it is unclear if they will maintain or cut federal funding for the state.

In his state of the state address at the state capitol on Wednesday, Governor Ned Lamont talked about those uncertainties, with education being one of them.

Much of the $400 million that Connecticut gets is used for special education.

“It’s somewhere around 6 percent of our total funding,” said Fran Rabinowitz, Executive Director of Connecticut Public School Superintendents.

She is worried about what President-Elect Donald Trump has pledged to do: defund the U.S. Department of Education and leave it up to the states.

Education Secretary Miguel Cardona believes that there’s a lot of risk for vulnerable students.
