Cedar Rapids Flood Control System could see more federal funding because of new legislation [Video]

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – New federal legislation will help speed up the next step of the Cedar Rapids flood control project.

The Water Resources Development Act will allow the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to reassess the current flood protection plan, something it hasn’t done since 2011.

One local business in the NewBo District said it no longer worries about if it will be flooded because of the city’s Flood Control System.

“Kind of a jarring first year,” Logan Orcutt said.

Goldfinch Cyclery in the NewBo district opened in 2015, but what it didn’t expect was June 2016’s flood that forced it to move to a different location on 12th Ave.

Bike shop co-owner Logan Orcutt said it was then he realized how important flood protection would be for his business.

“The whole plan to kind of future-proof and make this neighborhood, prevent this neighborhood from that trauma in the future was a big sigh of relief for sure,” Orcutt …
