Phoenix starting its search for new police chief [Video]

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Police Department is looking for its next chief with a nationwide recruitment effort starting later this month.

The next chief will oversee a $981 million budget, more than 2,500 officers — which they expect to grow to 3,125 sworn positions — 1,300 staff and the next phase of the Department of Justice’s federal investigation into Phoenix police. 

The DOJ published the findings of that investigation, which accused Phoenix police of violating the rights of homeless and minorities among other scathing criticisms, in June, 2024.

The last time Phoenix police had a permanent chief was the summer of 2022 when Jeri Williams retired after serving as chief for six years. Michael Sullivan was appointed as the interim police chief in 2022 following her departure.
