Lancaster leaders warn childcare crisis could get worse [Video]

LANCASTER, Pa. — On Monday, Lancaster County leaders met with state advocates to discuss Pennsylvania’s teacher shortage.

Heather Valudes, Lancaster Chamber president and CEO, says the shortage directly relates to the state’s childcare crisis.

“The piece we are advocating for is putting together dollars in the 2025, 2026 state budget that would support funding into childcare centers in order for them to recruit and retain childcare staff,” Valudes said.

Steve Doster, with the state initiative for early learning, Start Strong PA, revealed results of a September survey.

1,140 childcare providers across the state participated; 85% reported staff shortages, while 92% reported challenges recruiting teachers.

According to the survey, there are more than 3,000 unfulfilled positions statewide.
