Non-profits and those pushing for free school meals among many requesting more funding at start of legislative session [Video]

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) – The 2025 legislative session has just started and so have the calls for increased funding.

Non-profits who provide critical services and those pushing to make school lunches free are one of many groups who would benefit from more support.

It took four years to transform a Hartford shelter into what it is today: affordable and supportive housing for 24 families.

Non-profits provide housing as well as services for the homeless and those struggling with mental health and addiction.

“Chronic underfunding has forced us to close 20 programs over the past 10 years,” said President of Oak Hill Barry Simon.

Beds in group homes sit empty and staffing levels are critically low.

“People are not going to get served, that’s all there is to it. People who are in desperate need of services will not be able to access them,” said Kara Capone of Community Housing Advocates.
