A bank-draining scam is targeting the private financial details of sellers on Facebook Marketplace.
Fraudsters make contact on the online platform before firing off fake Australia Post QR codes to dupe sellers into thinking they can confirm the sale, secure their money and have the item shipped.
When the seller tries to collect their money through the code, cyber criminals get to work slyly trying to gather sensitive information they can use to steal, commit identity theft and more in an act known as “phishing”.
The purported “buyers” also claim they have already paid for transport of the item, even though Australia Post does not provide pre-payment services for online marketplace listings.
The dangerous and potentially costly scam is so serious it is understood Australia Post is preparing to release a fresh warning to customers soon.
The ruse begins with a scammer responding to the seller’s online advertisement.
