Work on Derriford Hospital’s new Accident and Emergency department is set to start this year, NHS bosses have confirmed. Following the announcement from Health Secretary Wes Streeting that the city hospital will get a new A&E as part of the hospital building programmes across the country, Plymouth’s health trust has confirmed the new build can progress ‘at pace.’
The new state-of-the-art facility will replace the University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust’s current Emergency Department described as ‘not fit for purpose.’ Plans for an improved Emergency Care Building for the south west peninsula’s major trauma centre have been in the pipeline for several years.
Following the Government announcement yesterday (Monday, January 21), Plymouth health bosses have confirmed in an update that contractors are already working on the demolition of existing areas to make way for the new building.
Construction is expected to commence in earnest in early Summer 2025 with an anticipated completion …
