The vehicle went off-road and collided with the trailer just before 8:30 a.m. on northbound I-5, south of Twin Cities Road.

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — A person was killed in a crash, which started a fire Tuesday morning along Interstate 5 in Sacramento County.

Their vehicle, a Lexus, went off-road and crashed into a semitruck trailer just before 8:30 a.m. on northbound I-5, south of Twin Cities Road, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

It is unclear why the Lexus went off-road and why the semitruck was off the road prior to the Lexus rear-ending it, authorities said.

CHP South Sacramento spokesman Officer Mark Leavitt said paramedics declared the Lexus driver dead at the scene. There were no passengers in their vehicle.

Both the vehicle and the semitruck trailer were fully engulfed in fire, Leavitt said.

Per CHP’s 2:30 p.m. social media update, all northbound I-5 lanes were reopen.
