OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington State Department of Ecology expects to finalize an agreement by 2026 to link its carbon market with the joint California-Québec cap-and-trade system.
According to the department, state regulators are currently making adjustments to ensure Washington’s market aligns with the existing California-Québec program. The potential linkage aims to create a larger, more integrated carbon trading market.
The department said that they are also seeking input from tribes, the Environmental Justice Council, community organizations, market participants and other stakeholders to assess the potential benefits of the agreement. Officials say they want to ensure the linkage supports Washington’s communities, economy and climate goals.
