Omaha I-480/Harney Street bridge to close for replacement project [Video]

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Starting Monday morning, you will not be able to cross the Harney Street bridge over I-480. It is being demolished to make way for a new bridge that can support the streetcar.

“So, starting Monday, you won’t be able to travel over that bridge by car or by foot,” said City Engineer Austin Rowser. “It will be fully closed to all traffic, all modes.”

Rowser tells First Alert 6 the bridge can not handle the weight of the upcoming streetcar. He says the Nebraska Department of Transportation marked the older bridge for removal.

“Obviously, that is not imminent with NDOT but with the onset of the streetcar and streetcar construction, when looking at the bridge, the bridge didn’t have the capacity to support a full streetcar, so we worked with NDOT to accelerate the timeline of the removal and replacement,” said Rowser.
