Cause identified in Martinez refinery fire [Video]

A cause for the fire at the Martinez Refining Company Saturday afternoon has been identified, officials said Sunday. 

Officials with the company said the fire was caused by a leak of hydrocarbon material. At least six employees were injured, and all have since been treated. 

Workers were opening equipment at the refinery during planned maintenance on one of the process units. 

Two workers spotted the leak and immediately evacuated the area as the material caught fire. Those two workers were among the injured. 

The fire broke out around 1:30 p.m. and was suppressed by around 8:30 p.m.  It was contained within the refinery.

Because of the fire, a shelter-in-place was temporarily put in place for certain parts of Martinez. The fire also prompted some road closures.

A health advisory is still in place for those with respiratory sensitivity, according to Contra Costa Health.
