AROUND ALASKA: Flood Assessment, K-9 Tribute and Trail Volunteers | Around Alaska [Video]

Government officials from Washington are in Juneau this week checking out flood damage. Teams from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Small Business Administration, along with state and tribal representatives are in the state capitol. They’re visiting homes, doing damage assessments, and gathering information to support any request for a federal declaration of emergency that could free up government relief money.

The Anchorage Police Department’s K-9 Unit is mourning the death of a pivotal figure in the founding of Dollars for Dogs in the city. Brenda Bissell was the wife of an APD Officer who lost his life on duty. She raised money to buy the department’s first two K-9 dogs in 1976 and later developed the Dollars for Dogs program.

Anchorage firefighters will be out on Friday looking for your help. The firefighters will be on the streets of the city hoping to Fill The Boot with donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The campaign to help those with neuromuscular diseases dates back to 1954.
