Atlanta business owner concerned about plans to reopen embattled gas station near GSU [Video]

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – A troubled gas station near the campus of Georgia State University in downtown Atlanta could soon reopen under new ownership.

The former RaceTrac on Piedmont Avenue NE closed in February following a deadly shooting and numerous other bouts of violence and nuisances to the surrounding community.

“They do donuts in the middle of the road and all that,” said Kenley Waller, owner of nearby Kenley’s Restaurant.

For the past five months, the gas pumps have remained taped off and closure signs have been posted on the front doors and windows of the shuttered business, but soon the doors could reopen.

A person named Barkat Lakhani submitted an application with the city of Atlanta to open a new convenience store at 120 Piedmont Ave NE. If approved, the new store would also sell beer and other alcohol products.

Waller says he’s not looking forward to the chaos returning.
