City of Canton to see tax increase in 2025 [Video]

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – If you live in the city of Canton, you will pay a little more in taxes starting January 1, 2025.

Last month, Canton City leaders approved an increased millage rate to 8, increasing the taxes you pay on your property and car tag.

It’s an extra cost that residents of the city of Canton say they weren’t surprised to see.

“Right now, most of my money is going to tax anyway. So, I mean, it’s not uncommon. I mean, I wouldn’t expect anything less. TThe price of everything is going up,” Raymond White, a 20-year homeowner in the city of Canton, explained.

Mayor William Truly says the taxes aren’t just for any city project. The money from the increase will go towards safety.

“We were having a tremendous drainage as a consequence of firemen loss, as a consequence of police loss, and the inability to recruit. …
