PORTLAND, Ore. — In a week, commercial Dungeness crab season will kick off along the Oregon Coast, and this is the time of year fisherman find out what kind of season they’re going to have.
Drive though the streets of Newport, and you’ll find crabbing pots littered all over, especially on the boats in Yaquina Bay. Crabbing season is the bread and butter of Newport this time of year, and the hundreds of boats that are sitting in Yaquina Bay are getting restless, just like the captain of those boats.
“Crab season is nerve wracking because of the danger, but it’s also super exciting,” said Kyle Retherford who’s been taking out his boat “Excalibur” for crab season for the last 15 years.
