NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – You could save money on groceries in 2025 if a grocery tax bill gets passed. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have filed legislation to cut the tax.
Tennessee’s grocery tax at 4% is among the highest in the country. Now, both Republicans and Democrats are hoping to get rid of it completely.
Democrats said eliminating the grocery tax would result in $755 million in lost revenue each year for the state. They said that could force funding cuts for other critical programs like healthcare and education. Rep. Aftyn Behn, a Democrat, is proposing to tax high-income businesses to make up for the hole in the budget.
Republicans have also filed a bill to cut the grocery tax. The Republican bill does not have a corporate tax included.
