Council accuses staff of rifling bins to cash in on Re-turn [Video]

Dublin City Council staff have been accused by management of rooting through public bins to cash in on discarded bottles and cans under the Re-turn scheme, writes Ian Begley.

Since the recycling initiative was launched in February, some people, such as young teenagers and vulnerable adults, have been reportedly making a small profit by collecting containers.

But now workers tasked with cleaning the capital’s streets are being blamed for benefiting from the practice.

The matter has caused such a stir in the council that a formal letter was issued to several department heads, including waste management, parks and landscapes, housing maintenance, and sports and recreation services.

Simon Brock, senior executive of human resources at Dublin City Council, wrote: “It has been brought to the attention of the Human Resources Department that there have been reports of incidents of employees separating litter waste deposited in Dublin City Council bins to make personal use of the …
