MYSTIC, Conn. (WFSB) – Minimum wage is going up on January 1.
One small business in Mystic has known this was coming and has been preparing.
At Bank Square Books, they have about 15 to 20 employees.
Some of them do make minimum wage, but everyone will be getting a raise on Wednesday.
“We are actually bumping up all of our lowest level employees to $16.50 just to stay ahead of the trends so we aren’t hit all at once,” said Robert Lee, Co-Owner, Bank Square Books.
Bank Square Books recently moved from downtown to further down Route 1.
When asked what it is like being a business owner in this economy, Lee said, “It’s scary as you can probably imagine. We don’t know what’s going to happen, what’s going to adjust, and what’s going to change.”
On Wednesday, Connecticut’s minimum wage will increase from $15.69 to $16.35.
