BOULDER — Carter Stoutmire had all the mentorship he needed when he made the transition from cornerback to safety this offseason.
His dad, Omar, played the position for 10 years in the NFL, including his first two with the Dallas Cowboys where one of his teammates was Deion Sanders.
Now, with Deion’s son, Shilo, out for a few weeks with an arm injury, the player tasked with replacing him in Colorado’s starting lineup is Omar’s son, Carter. Deion Sanders didn’t flinch when Stoutmire was elevated to a bigger role.
“He’s the future, a kid that we went and got out of high school and he’s doing a wonderful job,” Coach Prime said. “His daddy raised him profoundly. We talk often, he’s one of my dearest friends that played for the Cowboys with me and we lived right around the corner from one another back in the day.”
