A shadow of doubt has been cast over the future of copper coins, after the Treasury announced there were no plans to produce any more in the coming years.

On Wednesday, the Treasury revealed the controversial plans to stop minting 1p and 2p coins, as fears emerge the short-change could be phased out for good. 

The controversial move comes as a government spokesperson said they are ‘confident’ there is enough small change in circulation without the need to order more.

While some Brits reacted with howls of dismay at the potential end of the Great British penny, arcade owners voiced concerns for their businesses as society moves ever closer to becoming cashless.

Although the announcement has been a cause of heartbreak for certain Britons, others have revealed to MailOnline they will be glad to see their demise, dubbing them ‘filthy’ and a ‘waste of time’.
