Douglas County officials warn of new Brushing scam ahead of holidays [Video]

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – A scam called ‘Brushing’ is sweeping the nation this holiday season.

The Better Business Bureau said it starts with a package showing up at your front door that you didn’t expect.

It usually a lightweight gift, without a return address, but with a scannable QR code.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office warns to not scan it and immediately report the package.

“It inputs your sensitive information, your name, address, phone, email, credit card information,” Douglas County Sheriff Aaron Hanson said. “They’re going to exploit that.”

The BBB said your information can be used to create fraudulent reviews in your name, misleading other customers and potentially inflating a company’s sales.

It could also lead to identity theft and financial fraud.

The Sheriff’s Office is trying to find out if there are any brushing cases in Douglas County.
