MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Local businesses in Downtown Memphis are getting ready for an exciting Memphis Grizzlies season.
FedExForum will be hosting four Grizzlies games over the next week, starting Saturday night, and with that comes a lot of foot traffic.
Action News 5 spoke with the president of the Downtown Memphis Commission on Friday, and she says they’re installing more cameras and increasing police presence.
The public perception of crime in Memphis has been a deterrent for potential tourists. That perception comes after a record number of homicides and car thefts in 2023.
But those same statistics show a decrease in reported crimes this year, With homicides down 21% and car thefts down 37%, according to Memphis police.
Downtown Memphis is hoping that visitors take note of that difference, and that public perception adjusts accordingly.
