Dozens of lawmakers have signed onto a new bill on Beacon Hill that would stop the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles from suddenly yanking the licenses of hundreds of truck and bus drivers based on decades-old infractions. State and federal law don’t require those revocations, but that’s not been enough to get the RMV to hit the brakes. So now lawmakers say they will step in to force the Registry’s hand.The bill — House Docket 5374 — changes just one word of state law, but it would make a world of difference for drivers who, in some cases, say their infractions are from the last century, and because of that, they thought they were in the rearview mirror.The RMV mailed out letters suddenly last month telling nearly 500 drivers they would lose their commercial driver’s license in less than a week, no matter if they wanted to appeal.
