Extreme heat prompts closures of restaurant, schools, health department [Video]

FREMONT, Ohio (WTVG) – At VanNess’s Time Out Sports Bar, the hot weather hit at the worst time.

“Just another struggle of being a small business owner,” said owner Dean VanNess. “Today, it’s just too unbearably hot to have staff working.”

VanNess said his air conditioner stopped working on Aug. 27, 2024. It’s the same day the feels-like temperatures climbed past 100 degrees.

His new system is already on order but expected to arrive later in the week. So, VanNess decided to close until the replacement HVAC system can get up and running.

“We’ll just try to run fans and keep the equipment cool and try to salvage what we have here,” added VanNess.

Inside Tiffin City Schools, four buildings, including Tiffin Columbian High School, don’t have central air. So, Superintendent Jerry Nadeau and other administrators made the call to postpone the first day of school and cancel classes for …
