Federal Grant to Support Don Young Port of Alaska Modernization | Homepage [Video]

There are new updates on the modernization project underway at the Don Young Port of Alaska.

On Friday, Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance and other local officials announced a $50 million federal grant to support the port project. The money will mainly be used to demolish and rebuild a new cargo terminal.

That’s one of many steps in the port’s multi-year effort to modernize and sustain operations.

“Its modernization is a necessary once-in-a-generation project. It is an asset for which we have no alternative and it’s at risk of failing if we do not act,” said LaFrance.

The upgrades planned here at the port in Anchorage aim to improve safety, reduce sediment, and support cargo, military, and cruise operations.

Construction on the new cargo terminal should begin in the new year.
