Flood damage has major impact on businesses along Route 34 in Monroe [Video]

MONROE, Conn. (WTNH) — Floodwaters washed out a road on Route 34 in Monroe on Sunday night.

Route 34 is a well-traveled road drivers use to get to New Haven from Danbury and back. The section of Route 34, also listed as Roosevelt Drive, was over a small brook, but the water broke the road and rushed into Lake Zoar.

“Because the water was so turbulent, there was nothing we could do, so we just watched it all unfold in front of us,” Bob Defeo, owner of nearby Lake Zoar’s Drive-In and Lake Zoar Beach Club and Family Marina, said. “It was harrowing.”

Chunks of the pavement are in Defeo’s backyard. He said the rushing water flipped boats, kayaks and washed away furniture, jet skis and grills.
