From homeless to housed: Townspeople’s success stories [Video]

‘Townspeople’ throws a lifeline to people experiencing homelessness.

SAN DIEGO — Homelessness and medical emergencies can happen to anyone, which is why affordable housing continues to be a top priority in San Diego. 

In this Zevely Zone, I profile the non-profit organization Townspeople

Who better to talk about the challenges of homelessness than someone who survived it and now helps others? 

“This was graduation day from Columbia. It was a very proud moment for my family,” said Myiesha Phelps while showing me pictures from her life. 

After receiving a master’s of science from Columbia University, Myiesha was flying high. 

“I graduated from one of the best universities in the world,” she said. 

But the lows that followed, most notably the death of her mother, led to depression and homelessness. 

“I was very scared because I could not take of myself,” said Myiesha. “I could not find my way out of a paper bag.”

The non-profit organization Townspeople offered her a place to live, which offers four housing …
